Title: Game Engines: Past, Present and Future

Modified title: Evolution of Video Game Engines

The gaming industry has seen many leaps since its inception, however, rapid technological and social changes have broadened the scope of video game industry to a great extent.A more versatile and advanced gaming pursuits are being anticipated by industry experts across the world. In order to understand the properties, implications and scope of everchanging game engines, you mustknow about gaming developments that have already taken place in the past. However, I wouldlike to focus on the latest developments undergoing to reinvent more advanced game engines. It would be amazing to watch a whole new series of new game engines as a result of such developmental endeavors, which arereinventing the gaming industry. It would not be an exaggerationwhen we say thatour world isgoing to experience a bright and versatile video gaming future ahead.

Evolution of Game Engines

The technology behind video games has seen a rich past, as late twentieth and early twenty-first century evolved many successful products. Adapting more sophisticated hardware capabilities and complex software languagesconstantly kept reinventing ourgame engines. By yearend 2004, industry heard a new word of Xbox360 and PS3. The multi-core processors evolved a new term – ‘concurrency’, which was successfully enabled by adopting new hardware capabilities. This was a revolutionary game engine that outdated existing game engines, as these were no longer capable to implement the new gaming features. The advanced game engines are expected to deliver a multi-dimensional experience to their players.

An all new range of latest processors has motivated a soaring growth of hardware capabilities. These growing hardware capabilities have not only evolvedthe main CPU, but also the graphics cards (GPUs), processors andother Co-processors, including dedicated physics chips, video compression and more. The latest mobile phones are evenly configured with four processors and are expected to embrace more rapid changes evolvingultra-modern game engines in near future. The game engines have not yet seen much development in hardware performance and capability buildingssince 2009.

Contemporary Game Engines

The present game engines still fall short of tapping versatile gaming features as aided by outdated software paradigms. These game engines would requirere-designing,re-architectureand re-engineering,involving huge investment and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking besides configuringmultiple processors and new capabilities.

Future Game Engines

The emerginggrowth incloud computing and cloud storage supplemented with incredible data bandwidth has destroyed all boundaries conferring more powersand abilities to video game players. In order to yield the benefits of such powerful capabilities, a new level of the tool chain besides art and technology is required to be developed. Such a transforming behavior has been visible with development of Play station series, which not only provided a compatible hardware platform, but also implemented massive software changes resulting intoa successful video game.

Today’s game engines need to adapt more changesin order to manage multiplying complexities. If the video game developers do not adopt the required changes into the hardware of existing game engines, then they are probably leading towards a blind future. The increased processor count, supported by advanced capabilities and complex software, is expected to create a whole new world of amazing video game engines in near future.

Hi there, have you ever thought how you will make games using the new Source 2 engine without paying a dime. Valve made it official at the GDC 2015 summit. Source was being replaced. Source, for anyone who is in the dark, is the engine that supported the platform
